Sadly, Barry Dodd passed away in a helipcopter crash on 31st May this year. He was the Queen's representative in North Yorkshire - the county's Lord-Lieutenant.

Superintendent Dave Hannan said the helicopter was alight when emergency services arrived on the scene, and the force confirmed the sole occupant was Mr Dodd.

In a statement, Barry Dodd CBE's widow Frances said: "He was intelligent, compassionate and visionary. He enjoyed great business success but just as important to him was his devotion to public service and helping others. He was particularly proud to serve as Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire."

The Lord-Lieutenant is responsible for the promotion of civic, commercial, voluntary and social activities and North Yorkshire County Council said he was a successful entrepreneur, who had a passion for helping others in business. North Yorkshire County Council said Mr Dodd took up the role as Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant for North Yorkshire in September 2014.

Council leader Carl Les said: "Wherever he went, Barry was a positive influence. He has been a personal friend of mine for the last 30 years and the county council has lost a great friend and champion."
