Restoring Chassis 869
I purchased my 3 Litre Speed Model tourer in 1980, after several trips to England over the previous 5 years to see and learn all I could about Vintage Bentleys. The money finally materialized and the right car appeared. I had great fun with the car in Texas but this extremely original car was well worn and needed a complete restoration. I disassembled it completly and began the rebuild in the late 1980s. The body was shipped to Jim Pearce and returned to me with my invite to him and his wife to enjoy a vacation here at my expense. Naturally that included some quality time on the Bentley. I continued my work on the car but soon was stricken by Legionnaires Disease that set off a major stroke. Then we had the Savings & Loan Crisis. That was followed by the death of my wife. Disillusioned, the Bentley has sat in my shop and waited for me to get busy restoring it. After several on and off attempts while devoting almost all my time to my business, the time has come to get Chassis 869 back on the road. I have had the drive but not the time over the years. Now that I have retired and have recently married, the time and desire are burning inside of me and soon my wife and I will be putting many enjoyable miles on the 3 Litre. This web site was created by me to focus my mind on Vintage Bentleys. Now the restoration will be part of the web site and you will be receiving frequent updates on the progress.

I would like to thank the following vintage Bentley enthusiasts for their recent contributions:

Alistair Lang, Andrfew Bailey, Anthony Belcher, Bernd Lehmann, Brian Goodall, Damian Jones, David Benoit, David Brock-Jest, David Penttinen, David Rayfield, Edward LaBounty, Ernest Van Arendonk, Fred Farmer, Guy Gargett, Guy Mahy, John Collison, Kalila Haddad, Marinus, Ned Thompson, Nick Channing, Paul Cooper, Peter Sowden, Philippa, Phillip Schudmak, Raymond Reid, Steve Hamilton, Susan Culleton, Ulrich Girsberger, Zoe St John

Talking of Sports Cars: 3-litre Bentley

Published in "Autocar", April 13, 1945

For Bentley enthusiast R.G. Baillie, the acquisition of a 3-litre became a dream of his from the moment when he first saw the Bentley at the 1921 Motor Show, but it was many years before that dream was realised. As a matter of interest, the Bentley was originally shown at Olympia, in 1919, the first Motor Show after the 1918 Armistice. It appeared then as a chassis only, but in 1920 a complete car was on view, in the White City section of the Show, with an all-weather body, forming the only exhibit on the stand.

"My Grandfather Hugh Lang was the first owner of the vehicle in August 1926. This is a photograph of it from circa that date."

"This was my fathers car that we both drove around UK and raced at places like Silverstone, Oulton Park and many more places. Would love to get in touch with the current owner. I have also an original painting of the car by Roy Knockalls"

"This vehicle was indeed bought by my Great Grandmother for my Grandfather for use whilst he was up at Cambridge in 1923. I have his bonnet/radiator mascot from the car (Vautour by Max Le Verrier made in Paris 1923) which I would like to repatriate. I believe the vehicle is restored and in India."

"I have just purchased a large box of old photos from the 1920s to 1940s and it has a lovely black & white 8 inch x 6 inch photo of YN 2534 from the rear. The car has a soft top and a GB sticker on the rear passenger mud guard. The driver and passenger are both pointing out the windows. On reverse it has the Press Stamp (red ink) of London News Agency, 46 Fleet St, London. (I am happy to send photograph and if current owner wishes to buy photograph then happy to sell.)"

"I am the fifth owner and have owned this Bentley for the last ten years and have driven a total of 32,500 miles. My wife and I have travelled extensively throughout Europe in the Bentley and over the last seven years have driven 18,320 miles visiting"
