Soon we will have cooler weather and it will be time to attend to our cars, taking care of minor problems that have irritated us while on the road. I was looking for a proper sealant for a gasket.

The twisted and dried out tube used over the past many years got tossed in the trash and I went on the internet to find out what is available. It is always wise to do an internet search for the right product to solve your particular problem before you go to the nearest auto parts store and accept whatever they have.

With the varied composition of gaskets available on the market today, it is important that you use the proper sealant to ensure the gasket's seal effectively and not adversely affect the gasket's longevity. In many cases, using the correct sealant will actually extend the life of the gasket because it offers protection from engine heat as well as resistance to corrosive chemicals found in oils, fuels and other fluids that can cause the gasket to deteriorate over time.

A quick expedition on the Internet pointed me to literally thousands of sealants available today. Read this article to know more about a few of the basic groups of sealants you should have while tackling an engine, transmission, differential or minor repair.

I would like to thank the following vintage Bentley enthusiasts for their contributions in September 2013:

Brett Peattie, Charles Leith, Edward LaBounty, Geoff Skellon, Geoff Skellon, Gerhard Maier, James Spillings, Karsten Bauermeister, Lawrence Moore, Mark Spill, PJ Velzeboer, Russell Browne, Tim Houlding, Tim Sindall

Colorado Grand, 2013
Diary by Kurt Furger

"After the heavy rains and flooding we started the Colorado Grand today driving from Conifer to Vail where everybody is gathering. Derek MacNeil is my trusted co driver again, his second Grand. Leaving Conifer I turned over the steering wheel to him to get his brain adjusted to the Bentley gearbox. After about 45 minutes he found all the gears without brushing the teeth, he even managed to shift from 4th straight into 1st. We stopped for coffee and I could relax. There is still a bit of monsoon moisture left in the atmosphere, so we had a couple of sprinkles, but we should be basically dry for the rest of the week..."

Article from 1943
A Bentley With a Difference

Published in "The Autocar", May 14, 1943

Here is what J.G. Fry says about the 3-4 1/2 litre hybrid: "Recipe: take a good 3-litre Red Label Bentley chassis, mix in a good 4 1/2 litre engine gear box, and transmission and add a light two-seater body with accessories to taste. The result is a motorcar, which while still retaining a good vintage flavour, possesses a performance equalled by few other machines even of the most modern and expensive type..."

Readers Ask

On Sep 7, 2013 we received this e-mail from Tim Sindall
"My late father, James Hepburn Sindall, was a member of the Bentley Drivers Club when he owned a hill climber, blown Bentley in the early 1950s -- but I don't know the car registration or description. Could you help me to find this information, please?"

On Sep 4, 2013 we received this e-mail from James Spillings
"Is there any written history of Bentleys that were 'modified' by W.O.'s brother H.M. Bentley who ran the service department of Bentley Motors? The Bentleys in question, and I believe that only 16 or 18 were produced, were referred to as HM Bentleys."

Please write to Robert if you can shed any light on the above. Thank you..
