Last month, I sparked avid response from readers regarding oil filters and modified oil circulation. You can read all the comments and recommendations in the article below. I really appreciate everyone who took the time to enter the discussion. It is more that just interesting reading. The information will help us keep our machines on the road longer and performing better. It also shows that there are a lot of us interested in hands-on maintenance and restoration.

On the subject of filters, let's move up to the carburetors. Like most of the 3 Litre Speed Models, there are no air filters. They did not come with air filters when new and I always thought that was rather odd as all carburetors should have air filters. Other Vintage Bentley models have air filters as do most all cars that have SU carburetors. The problem is that on the 3 Litre Speed Models, the carburetors fit up close to the bonnet leaving little room for fitting an air filter. I have seen some modifications to add air filters but how effective they are, I am not sure. So what is one to do? Let's hear your answers.

I would like to thank the following vintage Bentley enthusiasts for their contributions in January 2014:

Agustin Andresen, Bruce Mackenzie, Charles Crail, Chris Johnston, Chris S, Chris Tutton, David Morley, David Reynolds, Donald Day, Ed Gehringer, Geraint OWen, Gordon Sawyer, Gordon Webster, Gregory Porter, Hugh Apthorp, Ian Cumming, James Medcalf, Janet Lyons, John Murch, John Murray, John Skidmore, Mike Edgar, Mike Tebbett, Neil Collins, Nick Meijer, Norbert Andrup, Peter Graham, Pipo Aymamí, R D Wellden, R. Oil filter and circulation system in Vintage Bentleys

The focus of our January 2014 newsletter was whether the oil filter and circulation system on an early 3 Litre (or any other Vintage Bentley) be maintained as original or can it, or should it be improved or replaced?

This topic has generated significant interest and we are updating the page constantly with feedback received from our readers.

Great Racing Marques: Bentley

By E.K.H. Karslake
Published in "Motor Sport", November 1933

The name of Bentley was by no means unknown in the racing world before the first car bearing it ever made its appearance. All followers of the sport in pre-War days remembered "W.O." on his little D.F.P. in the 1914 T.T., and the plucky performance which he put up. When, therefore, directly after the war it became known that he was going to produce a sports car of his own, interest was thoroughly aroused.
