3 Litre Magnetos

It may be wished to synchronise the magnetos and to do this the following procedure should be used. The off side magneto should be fully advanced and set to 45 degrees before top dead centre, as marked by the flywheel. Then by rotating the other magneto on its flange set it approximately correct by eye. The engine should then be turned backwards and a piece of tissue paper placed in between the points of the make and break on each magneto. As soon as the offside magneto has reached 45 degrees the points will open and the paper will be released. The other magneto should then be rotated on its flange until it releases its piece of paper at the same instant.

To time the ignition the flywheel should be turned till No. 1 cylinder (the nearest to the radiator) is on the firing stroke, which is marked on the flywheel as a line between numbers 1, and 4. This mark must of course be in the top central position. The distributor head should now be removed and the rotor arm should be opposite the terminal that carries the high-tension wire to number 1 plug. After this the procedure is the same as that of synchronising the magnetos explained in the preceding paragraph.

The M.L. magnetos should be given a little attention periodically. The points should be set to 0.019" gap with the gauge on the magneto spanner supplied in the tool kit, and once a fortnight the ring on which the contact breaker arm actuates should be smeared lightly with a little Vaseline, to ensure that rapid wear does not take place on the fibre pad. Lack of lubrication also causes a high-pitched squeak when the engine is running slowly.
