Oil Filter
Q&A :: 0002

QUESTION After purchasing my 3 Litre (Chassis No. 869), like most owners, I was concerned about proper maintenance. Regular oil changes are essential. After the shock of how much oil the engine holds, I had a second surprise. The oil filter did not look very effective.

At the time The Technical Facts of the Vintage Bentley did nothing to shed light on a modern paper filter replacement for the original gauze filter. Inspired by a "BDC Review" article by Robert Middelmann in the August 1995 review (Issue 197, pages 235-236), I created the following modified filter using a filter for a Mercedes-Benz 300 Series six-cylinder 3.0 fuel injected model. The filter is a NAPA 1145. A Purelator L44757 is an alternative

The metal insert fitted on the base of the paper filter is a design that attempts to more evenly distribute the incoming oil. A spring (not shown) goes between the top of the filter and canister cover to hold the filter securely in place.

Note that oil now needs to travel in the reverse direction, so connecting pipes have to be reversed.

But is this a good alternative? I devised this oil filter a couple of years ago and, as the Bentley restoration is not quite finished, I have yet to try the filter out. I am concerned that I am restricting oil flow. Could this filter damage the engine? Comments please.

  ANSWER (2)

Hi Rob, Its a long time since I struggled with your lathe in Housten. The oil filter mods were originally made by Len Wilton and have been copied through the decades. The problem with this solution is that if the oil system contains water, say from a leaking drain tube gasket, then the filter will self destruct blocking the oilways with disastrous results. If fitting such a filter system is desired, then a pressure actuated bypass valve should be fitted. Its probably best to fit a modern filter which has the bypass inegral with the unit.

ANSWER Robert, You might be interested in this earlier project, which began because the previous owner had fitted a clutch brake. This sat directly in front of the gearbox and made it impossible to attach a speedo cable! As an aside there is some folklaw that suggests the aluminium drive gear for the speedo drive is a bit of a liability and can distribute itself through the gearbox.

With this in mind, and the former practical problem, I made a separate drive taken from the prop shaft (A modern Hardy Spicer type). It may sound a bit Heath-Robinson when I say that the drive is supplied via a rubber band, but it is a modern polypropylene belt and so far has stood the test of time. I attach some photos. Dave
