Bentley 3/4½ litre Red Label with body by Van Den Plas
Year: 1923
Price: (AUD) 369,500
VIN-No: 1199

This original 3 litre Red Label Bentley was delivered new to Lord Cunliffe in the UK, and subsequently purchased by John "jumbo" Goddard, I believe on or for his 21st birthday.

He imported the car into Australia, and it was credited with holding the timed record of 19 hours for the Sydney to Adelaide [via Broken Hill] course, with Ian Cummins as navigator/co driver. A very quick time even by today’s standard. There was an article on this effort, and I am currently researching this, together with further history on this car, and Jumbo Goddard the man.

Recently this car has had the following carried out: Rewired and Pirot shaft and brake rebuild. Original 3 litre motor, but with 4½ litre block with new valve gear, Phoenix crankshaft and rods. Magnetos are also 4½ litre and a mild cam is fitted. The gearbox has also been rebuilt with all new gears and correct shafts.

The car also boasts the 4½ litre fuel tank and big brakes.

The bodywork is the original "Vanden Plas" type as fitted by Bentley Motors, and this really was the default style tourer for this Bentley model, as it became to be known. In very good condition, with heaps of patina it is quite rare to find a 3 litre body and interior so well preserved.

This car was last sold at Brookmans and Bonhams Auction of the Jumbo Goddard collection in 1984 in Sydney after he had passed away in 1983.

(Car in the photographs bears Reg. No. OOJ 833 on the number plate.)
