In 1927 the Bentley factory built a car for the Le Mans 24 hour race using the standard 3L Speed Model chassis with Van den Plas touring body like Ch 1078. They installed the new 4½L engine. It was much faster than the other 3 liters they entered. However, unfortunately, it crashed. The next year, for 1928, they entered several 4½L cars, including the one from 1927. The 'old' 1927 car won the 1928 Le Mans race. Bentley went on to win another two times, for a total of five Le Mans wins up to 1930.

Chassis 1078 is The culmination of nearly 40 years of Vintage Bentley ownership. The owners first Vintage Bentley was purchased and re-built while living in the UK in 1970. This car embodies experiences gained in re-building, touring, showing and racing vintage Bentley and XK Jaguar cars over those years.

If you want to do the Peking to Paris Rally, the Le Mans Retrospective and/or the Monaco Vintage Races, this is the car for you. If you just want reliable high speed continental touring, Alaska to New York Rallying or anything in between, no problem. Or, just a great week end family car you can also take to a concourse and win a prize.

The car has performed well in a limited number of VSCCA sponsored Vintage Races. These include the 2001 Vintage Fall Festival at Limerock, Ct., the 2003 Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix and the 2003 VIR VSCCA Vintage Races. Racing activities have been rather limited, particularly in the last 5 years due to the owner's physical inability to participate (principally back problems).

Concours awards have been won at the Radnor Hunt Concourse in Malvern, PA, whenever the car was presented for judging.

Chassis 1078 represents the history and the romance of an original Vintage Bentley updated mechanically for modern highway driving while sympathetically restored to original appearance and specification. The ultimate classic pre-war sports car for all seasons.

Asking price: US$340,000
