First International Bentley 8 Litre Rally: 18-25 June, 2016

Day 6 - the final day, and as we set off Mr. Bentley and I realise we haven’t filled up for a couple of days and envisage us freewheeling down the mountain to the nearest petrol station. The W.O 8-Litre though has done suprising well in this respect and we have no need to worry, easily making our way to a gas station. We finish our tour with a visit to the private car collection of Gerard Burkhardt in Motier and then taste the Swiss version of champagne.

I start to ask everyone what their thoughts are about the week..

Gruppe – Bentley 8 Litre Thrupp & Maberly Saloon s/n YR5087, now H&H 4-seater – Sonderbild

Terry Lister from Warwickshire is here with his wife Margaret. Terry bought the car because he wanted to do some "decent rallies" – he has subsequently done 70,000 miles in it. Despite having bust his Achilles and wearing a boot, he has come saying, "he wouldn’t have missed it for the world".

Mark Hyman from the US has come with his son Drew who is 18. Drew’s been driving his Dad’s Open Sports Tourer but is finding the gears a bit challenging. Mark tells me that "The 8-Litre is my most favourite car – the only drawback is that it makes everything else seem average”..

In the evening there are heartfelt tributes to Franco and Kathy. It has been a unique event. The cars and their drivers have had a real work-out on the mountains but all complete the week.

As Frank says to my Mr. Bentley with a wink “Great Uncle Walter, John, would have been proud eh?”…
