Frank Sowden and PPB10, YF5006, 8 litre Bentley
Contributed by Peter Sowden

My father bought his first Bentley in early 1960. It was a wonderful black with red chassis, a 4½ litre. He owned this for a few months then sold it to a man in Hawaii; sorry don’t know the registration or chassis number. With the money from the sale of the 4½ he purchased PPB10, and a rolling chassis Speed Six. Frank built the body for the Speed Six. This Speed Six, some years later, was sold to John Nutter, who put an 8 litre engine into it. At the same time Frank extended our garage at home. The garage could now house 5 cars and had a work area that could house a car as well. The work area had all the tools necessary to maintain the Bentleys, with an H section girder running the length of the work area, used for lifting blocks, and gear boxes. There was also a small lathe and grinding wheel, plus a large assortment of tools.

PPB10 was Frank’s everyday car — we would go to work in the 8 litre, go shopping in the 8 litre and of course go racing the Bentley, plus travel up to Scotland to have fun at the Scottish BDC Whit weekend. Those weekends were very special. We made some wonderful friends through the BDC clubs in UK.
