1927 4½ Bentley with coachwork by Vanden Plas
This vintage Bentley offers an increasingly rare opportunity to purchase an iconic car from the golden age of W.O. Bentley history. Built in 1927 and delivered new in October of that year, chassis number ST3008, with engine number ST3009 was commissioned with Vanden Plas 4 seat sports bodywork body number 1415.

ST3008 was first registered to a Mr P. G. Ormrod, and allocated registration number YT158. The car remained in the UK until approximately 1947, when the first known New Zealand owner registered the car. Over the fullness of time, the car has received the following care and attention.

The original Vanden Plas body has been replaced with a simiar VDP Tourer body from chassis 3426 (Vanden Plas body number 1546), and has relatively recently benefited from the following replacement parts to the engine:

New balanced crankshaft and shell bearings from Phoenix Design and Engineering, 4 new con rods with shell bearings from Phoenix Design and Engineering, New Cylinder Block from John Ambler in UK, 4 new Arias Forged Pistons from USA 7:1 Compression Ratio, 1 set new Valve Guides, 1 set new Valves, 1set new Valve Springs, Full set of Steel Camshaft/Valve Rockers, Clutch relined, New full flow Oil Filter Conversion, Left Magneto Overhauled. In addition the car also received a new hood, and was re-upholstered at the same time. Further updates for modern motoring have included the fitment of the A’box gear ratios, and Laycock overdrive. The car retains a cone clutch.

The car sits on period correct 525-21” wheels and tyres. The car displays a fantastic patina, and has been maintained to a standard befitting such an elegant piece of motoring history.

This car is for sale as of September 4, 2008.

Chassis ST3008. 4½ Litre Tourer
Don Oddie purchased this 4.5L from Russell Beach and in 1963 sold it to Jim Sullivan of Otaio, south of Timaru. Initially this car, the seventh 4½ Litre to be manufactured, had been imported into NZ by a Nelson doctor. Later it was sold by Jim Sullivan's estate to Warner Mauger of Christchurch, who after a few years sold it overseas. In this photograph an overseas visitor, Jerry Carver, is at the wheel.
